A railroad and land run town, El Reno has a rich and deep connection with its history. Several extraordinary museums and historic sites, along with Oklahoma's only rail-based trolley and beautiful architecture make the city a great stop along Route 66, and an amazing place to call home.
El Reno was originally the city of Reno, named after Fort Reno, and situated five miles north along the banks of the North Canadian River. Often confused with Reno, NV by the postal system, the town changed its name to El Reno after a flood forced the city to move further from the river. In 1948 the grounds of Fort Reno were converted to a research laboratory for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has remained as a laboratory to this day.
El Reno boasts some of the best schools in the greater Oklahoma City area. With a better student to teacher ratio than the state and national average, and above-average test scores, El Reno's schools are a great place for your children to receive an education.
El Reno provides a wide range of opportunities for you to get out and enjoy time with friends and family. Head down to Route 66 for a classic car cruise or to beautiful Lake El Reno for drag boat races! You can even take a ghost tour of the historic Fort Reno and cemetery after catching a ride on Oklahoma's only rail-based trolley. The outdoor lover will find Lake El Reno a great spot for camping, fishing, kayaking, and more.
The close proximity of El Reno to Oklahoma City provides easy access to the city with all of its shopping and restaurants, such as The Oklahoma City Outlet Mall or Bricktown with its eclectic storefronts and great local food.
