THE CITY OF HOT SPRINGS
A natural escape in the Natural State
Nestled in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs has a long and rich history as one of the nation's first resort towns. Home of the first United States National Park, historic bathhouses fed from natural hot springs, and the Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, Hot Springs is a great place to call home.
Hot Springs began as one of the nation's first resort destinations and continues to thrive as a getaway for many from around the country. The city is filled with natural beauty from the rolling hills, hot springs, and lakes that dot the landscape. Though the year-round population of Hot Springs is under 40,000, it's status as a tourist destination means the city offers amenities of a much larger city. Museums, a theme park, a fantastic live music scene, shopping and so much more make Hot Springs the ultimate "small town with big-city amenities."
There is so much that Hot Springs has to offer to everyone from the history buff, to the outdoor adventurer, thrill-seeker, and nature lover. The Mid-America Science Museum offers hours of interactive learning, while the Gangster Museum of America highlights the stories of notorious gangsters like Al Capone, Bugs Moran, and Frank Costello who made the Spa City a frequent vacation spot. With Lake Hamilton integrated into the city, and Lake Ouachita and Lake Catherine just a short drive away, the outdoorsman will be right at home.
For centuries the hot springs that gave the Spa City its name have been believed to possess healing properties and used by several Native American tribes for such purposes. However, in 1832, the United States Congress designated the area as the Hot Springs Reservation, later named Hot Springs National Park, the first such designated area in the nation. The city was incorporated in 1851, and thrived as a resort destination, especially during Reconstruction following the Civil War. Hot Springs is also credited as the "birthplace" of Spring Training baseball, beginning in 1886 through the middle of the 20th century.
Hot Springs Public Schools has more than 3,500 students enrolled, and one of the nations best student-to-teacher ratios with just 11.4:1. With several Magnet Elementary Schools, a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities to help students thrive in their learning environment.
Fun is never in short supply for any individual or family! Head over to Gulpha Gorge for camping or hiking, or take the boat out on Lake Hamilton. Explore the history of downtown on Bath House Row, grab a drink at the Arlington Hotel, and then enjoy a thoroughbred horse race at Oaklawn Racing and Casino. Catch a thrill at Magic Springs Theme and Water Park, or walk the serine trails of Garvan Woodland Gardens. Whatever your family enjoys doing, Hot Springs has to offer.
For foodies, Hot Springs offers some amazing local cuisine from Argentinian Coffee & Wine Bar, to The Avenue and rooftop bar of the Waters Hotel. A walk down Central Avenue in downtown offers unique finds from the many boutique shops that line the street. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
